Scallion, Fermented Soybean, and Platycodon Decoction

葱豉桔梗汤 〔蔥豉桔梗湯〕 cōng chǐ jié gěng tāng

Ingredients

Actions: Clears heat and resolves the exterior.

Indications: Initial stages of wind warmth when evil heat fetters the lung and defense. Signs: headache and generalized heat effusion, mild aversion to wind and cold, cough, sore throat, and dry mouth. For coughing up of phlegm without gratification, add arctium, peucedanum, trichosanthes fruit, and apricot kernel to transform phlegm.

Method: Decoct with water.

Variations: Coughing up of phlegm without gratification: Add Niú bàng zǐ (牛蒡子 Arctii Fructus, arctium [seed]), Qián hú (前胡 Peucedani Radix, peucedanum [root]), Guā lóu (瓜蒌 Trichosanthis Fructus, trichosanthes [fruit]), and Xìng rén (杏仁 Armeniacae Semen, apricot kernel) to transform phlegm.
