Vacuity-Supplementing Qì-Righting Gruel
补虚正气粥 〔補虛正氣粥〕 bǔ xū zhèng qì zhōu

Ingredients
- Huáng qí (黄芪 Astragali Radix, astragalus [root]) (mix-fried) 30–60g
- Sān qī (三七 Notoginseng Radix, notoginseng [root]) 3–5g
- Bái shā táng (白沙糖 Saccharon Granulatum Album, white sugar) 1 pinch
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice) 60–90g
Actions: Supplements qì and fortifies the spleen.
Indications: Weakness in old age, emaciation from enduring illness, vacuity of the five viscera with flusteredness, shortness of breath, spontaneous sweating, spleen vacuity with enduring diarrhea, poor appetite, qì vacuity swelling.
Method: Soak ginseng and astragalus for half an hour, decoct and reserve fluid, add water and decoct again, and strain. Combine both lots of fluid, add rice, boil to a gruel, adding sugar just before the end. Note that 15–30 gr codonopsis may be used instead of the ginseng.
Rationale: Huáng qí invigorates the spleen and stomach, while Rén shēn greatly supplements original qì.
