Spontaneous sweating

自汗 〔自汗〕zì hàn

1. Sweating that occurs with heat effusion. The term is used in this sense in On Cold Damage (伤寒论 shāng hán lùn).

2. Excessive sweating during the daytime or sweating at the slightest physical exertion. It occurs in patients suffering from qì or yáng vacuity and is an indication of vacuous defense qì and a slackening of the interstices. It also occurs in blood vacuity, phlegm obstruction, and dampness damage. It may also occur in wind damage, summerheat stroke, warm disease, soft tetany, and cholera.
