Ingredients:

• Bǎi zǐ rén (柏子仁 Platycladi Semen, arborvitae seed) 60g
• Bàn xià qū (半夏曲 Pinelliae Massa Fermentata, pinellia [tuber] leaven) 60g
• Mǔ lì (牡蛎 Ostreae Concha, oyster shell) 30g
• Rén shēn (人参 Ginseng Radix, ginseng) (or Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root])) 3g
• Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]) 30g
• Má huáng gēn (麻黄根 Ephedrae Radix, ephedra root) 30g
• Wǔ wèi zǐ (五味子 Schisandrae Fructus, schisandra [berry]) 30g
• 净麸 15g
• Hóng zǎo (红枣 Jujubae Fructus, jujube) 90g

Action: Nourishes the heart and quiets the spirit; harmonizes the stomach and checks sweating.

Indication: Heart qì vacuity with fright palpitation or fearful throbbing, unquiet sleep, night sweating, and lack of strength.

Method: Grind to a fine powder and blend with honey.

Dosage: 6–9g twice a day. Swallow with water.

Rationale: The chief function of the formula is to nourish the heart and quiet the spirit, supported by that of harmonizing the stomach and checking sweating. Bǎi zǐ rén is the sovereign agent because it nourishes the heart and quiets the spirit, but also boosts the blood to check sweating. Rén shēn boosts qì and quiets the spirit. Bái zhú supplements the spleen and checks sweating. Bàn xià leaven harmonizes the stomach and transforms phlegm. Wǔ wèi zǐ, Mǔ lì, and Má huáng gēn constrain sweat. Wǔ wèi zǐ also quiets the spirit. Bran harmonizes the spleen and stomach, and checks vacuity sweating. Dà zǎo supplements the spleen and stomach, nourishes provisioning, and quiets the spirit.
