Method: Decoct with water. When used to treat malarial disease, it should be administered 3 hours before attack.
Rationale: Cǎo guǒ is an acrid aromatic turbidity-transforming agent that repels foulness and checks retching, and outthrusts deep-lying evils. Hòu pò is a warm acrid damp-transforming agent that moves qì and abducts stagnation. Bīng láng nut is an acrid agent that disperses phlegm turbidity, moves qì, and breaks stasis. These three harsh acrid agents reach straight to the membrane source to expel the evil. Hence, they are the sovereign agents. Huáng qín and Zhī mǔ drain fire and resolve toxin. Bái sháo and Gān cǎo help the action of Huáng qín and Zhī mǔ and prevent the harsh acrid agents from damaging yīn.
