Action: Clears the gallbladder and transforms phlegm; harmonizes the stomach and quiets the spirit.
Indication:
Category: Phlegm-dispelling formulas / Dampness-drying phlegm-transforming formulas
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Zhú rú are cool and sweet; they clear the gallbladder and eliminate vexation, as well as transforming phlegm and checking retching. Bàn xià is warm and acrid; it dries dampness and dispels phlegm, as well as harmonizing the stomach and checking retching. These two are the sovereign agents. Zhǐ shí move qì and disperses phlegm making the phlegm descend with the qì. Chén pí rectifies qì and dries dampness. Fú líng fortifies the spleen and percolates dampness, eliminating the developing of phlegm. Shēng jiāng helps the Bàn xià to transform phlegm and resolves its toxicity. The small amount of Gān cǎo and Dà zǎo boosts the spleen and harmonizes the stomach.
Notes: The word warming
is explained as invigorate.
The Táng dynasty Priceless Prescriptions (qiān jīn fāng) formula of the same name contained no poria or jujube.
