十灰散(丸) 〔十灰散(丸)〕shí huī sǎn (wán)

Source: Shí Yào Shén Shū 十药神书

Ingredients:

Action: Cools the blood; promotes contraction and stanches bleeding.

Indication: Vomiting of blood, retching of blood, expectoration of blood, nosebleed or bleeding gums.

Category: Blood-rectifying formulas / Blood-stanching formulas

Method: All ingredients are subjected to nature-preservative burning and ground to a powder. This formula can also be prepared as a decoction.

Dosage: 3–9g 2–3 times a day.

Rationale: Xiǎo jì, 大蓟, Hé yè, Cè bǎi yè, Bái máo gēn, and Qiàn cǎo all cool the blood and stanch bleeding. Zhī zǐ clears heat and drains fire. Zonglupi is astringent and stanches bleeding. Mǔ dān pí cools the blood and dispels stasis. Dà huáng abducts heat downward, and also helps to transform stasis. Thus, the formula as a whole stanches bleeding without allowing stasis. All the agents are subjected to nature-preservative burning, which is said to enhance blood stanching.
