Action: Cools the blood and stanches bleeding.
Indication: Frenetic movement of hot blood, coughing of blood, vomiting of blood, or nosebleed with bright red blood, dry throat and mouth. Tongue: Red or crimson. Pulse: Stringlike, rapid, and forceful.
Category: Blood-rectifying formulas / Blood-stanching formulas
Method: Original source says prepare in pill form; now taken as fresh juice or boiled and taken as a decoction.
Rationale: Blood is stored by the liver. When liver fire is effulgent its and free coursing is excessive, the heat can cause frenetic movement of provisioning-blood, manifesting as bleeding. Cold sweet Shēng dì huáng enters the liver channel. It clears heat and enriches yīn, thereby cooling provisioning and stanching bleeding. The other four agents enter the liver channel and all stanch bleeding, but each has its special features: Hé yè disperses stasis; Cè bǎi yècools the blood; and mugwort quickens the blood. All the agents are best used in their fresh form for their greater heat-clearing action.
