Expectoration of blood

咯血 〔咯血〕kǎ xuè

The bringing up of blood from the chest. The term has two meanings:

1. Confucian Filiality (儒门事亲 rú mén shì qīn) describes this pattern as the expectoration of a blood clot or fresh blood preceded by a sensation of fishy-smelling blood in the throat. Expectoration of blood is mostly attributable to yīn vacuity with effulgent fire or lung dryness-heat.

Medicinal therapy: Enrich yīn and downbear fire. Use Adenophora/Glehnia and Ophiopogon Decoction (沙参麦冬汤 shā shēn mài dōng tāng), Mulberry Leaf and Apricot Kernel Decoction (桑杏汤 sāng xìng tāng), or Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill (六味地黄丸 liù wèi dì huáng wán).

2. In some books, such as On Blood Patterns (血证论 xuè zhèng lùn), this term refers to expectoration of phlegm streaked with threads of blood, which arises when effulgent heart channel fire disquiets the blood vessels.

Medicinal therapy: Clear the heart. Expectoration of blood calls for careful correlation of all signs.

Etymology

See expectoration of phlegm.
