Category: Dryness-relieving formulas / External dryness formulas

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Sāng yè is a light, clear effusing and dispersing agent; it is effective in clearing and coursing the lung channel and in eliminating wind-heat or dryness-heat from the exterior. However, its action is relatively mild, it is combined with Zhī zǐ, which clears and drains lung heat, and with acrid and slightly warm Dàn dòu chǐ, which diffuses the dryness evil. Xìng rén is a warm bitter acrid moist agent that diffuses lung qì. Cold bitter and moist Zhè bèi mǔ transforms dryness-phlegm. Shā shēn and Lí pí are cool sweet clearing and moistening agents that engender liquid and transform phlegm.
