Rhubarb and Ground Beetle Pill
大黄蟅虫丸 〔大黃蟅蟲丸〕dà huáng zhè chóng wán

Ingredients:
- Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb) (steamed) 8g
- Zhè chóng (蟅虫 Eupolyphaga seu Steleophaga , ground beetle) 6g
- Táo rén (桃仁 Persicae Semen, peach kernel) 6g
- Méng chóng (虻虫 Tabanus , tabanus) 6g
- Shuǐ zhì (水蛭 Hirudo , leech) 8 pieces
- Qí cáo (蛴螬 Holotrichiae Vermiculus, June beetle grub) 6g
- Bái sháo (白芍 Paeoniae Radix Alba, white peony [root]) 12g
- Gān dì huáng (干地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata, dried rehmannia [root]) 30g
- Xìng rén (杏仁 Armeniacae Semen, apricot kernel) 6g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 6g
- Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) 6g
- Gān qī (干漆 Toxicodendri Resina, lacquer) 3g
Action: Breaks blood and disperses concretions; dispels stasis and frees the channels.

Method: Grind to a powder, and form into pills. Take with warm wine.
Dosage: 3g 1–2 times a day.
Rationale: Dà huáng quickens the blood and dispels stasis. Zhè chóng breaks the blood and disperses concretions. This combination of acrid diffusing and bitter precipitating agents make the static blood pass out through the stool. Méng chóng, Qí cáo, Gān qī, Táo rén, and Shuǐ zhì quicken the blood and free the network vessels, disperse stasis and break concretions. Táo rén is also used for it action of diffusing lung qì, which helps to move the blood. Shēng dì huáng, Bái sháo, and Gān cǎo nourish the bleed vessels; they are added to support right qì. Enduring blood stasis tends to form heat, so Huáng qín is added to clear depressed heat. The wine helps to move the other agents.
