Cold-Dispelling Fright-Assuaging Decoction
逐寒荡惊汤 〔逐寒蕩驚湯〕zhú hán dàng jīng tāng

Ingredients:
- Dīng xiāng (丁香 Caryophylli Flos, clove) 1.5–3g
- Ròu guì (肉桂 Cinnamomi Cortex, cinnamon bark) 2–3g
- Hú jiāo (胡椒 Piperis Fructus, pepper) 1.5–3g
- Jiāng (姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma, ginger) (blast-fried) 1.5–3g
- Zào xīn tǔ (灶心土 Terra Flava Usta , oven earth) 60–90g
Action: Expels cold and eliminates fright.

Method: Make a decoction of the oven earth, and then use this to boil the other constituents. Split into a number of helpings and take warm.
Rationale: Ròu guì warm the center and supplements yáng. Dīng xiāng warms the center, downbears counterflow, and checks vomiting. These agents together form Dīng guì sǎn (丁桂散 Clove and Cinnamon Powder). They are supported by pepper, which enhances the warming and dispersing effect, and Pào jiāng and oven earth which not only warm the center but also check
Variations:
- Pronounced
spleen-stomach vacuity : Add Rén shēn (人参 Ginseng Radix, ginseng) and Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]). - Serious
convulsions : Add wind-extinguishedtetany -checking agents such as Quán xiē (全蝎 Scorpio , scorpion) and Wú gōng (蜈蚣 Scolopendra , centipede).
