Well-Tested Uterine Bleeding Formula
治崩证极验方 〔治崩證極驗方〕 zhì bēng zhèng jí yàn fāng

Ingredients
- Dì yú (地榆 Sanguisorbae Radix, sanguisorba [root]) (stir-fried) 24g
- Mǔ lì (牡蛎 Ostreae Concha, oyster shell) 15g
- Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root]) 30g
- Xiān máo (仙茅 Curculiginis Rhizoma, curculigo [root]) 12g
- Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) 12g
- Chuān lián (川连 Coptidis Rhizoma Sichuanense%#%, Sìchuān coptis [root]) 9g
- Mǔ dān pí (牡丹皮 Moutan Cortex, moutan [bark]) 9g
- Zhī zǐ (栀子 Gardeniae Fructus, gardenia [fruit]) (scorched) 9g
- Lián xū (莲须 Nelumbinis Stamen, lotus stamen) 9g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 6g
Actions: Clears heat and stanches bleeding.
Indications: Flooding and spotting (copious red blood) with dry mouth and parched lips. Tongue fur: Yellow. Pulse: Rapid and forceful.
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Zhī zǐ, Huáng qín, and Huáng lián clear heat. Shēng dì huáng and Mǔ dān pí cool the blood. Dì yú, Lián xū, and Mǔ lì are securing astringents that stem the flow of blood. Bái sháo and Mǔ lì calm the liver and subdue yáng.
Variations:
Qì vacuity : Add Rén shēn (人参 Ginseng Radix, ginseng) to boost qì and contain the blood.- Persistent bleeding: Add Wū méi (乌梅 Mume Fructus, mume [fruit]), Qiàn cǎo (茜草 Rubiae Radix, madder [root]), Mò hàn lián (墨旱莲 Ecliptae Herba, eclipta), and Cè bǎi yè (侧柏叶 Platycladi Cacumen, arborvitae leaf) to enhance the blood-stanching action.
