Indications: Summerheat-damp spreading through the triple burner with persistent
Method: Decoct with 5 cups of water, reducing to 3 cups. Split into two doses and take warm.
Rationale: This formula treats summerheat-damp that is not limited to the center burner, as is often the case. Summerheat-damp in the exterior gives rise to persistent heat effusion; affecting the upper burner, it causes coughing of phlegm and oppression in the chest; in the center burner, it encumbers the spleen, causing glomus in the stomach duct; in the lower burner it upsets the normal separation of the clear and turbid (fluids and solids), so that stool is thin and urine is scant. Xìng rén diffuses upper burner and lung qì. Shí gāo, Jīn yín huā, Zhú rú, Fèn qīng clear and resolve summerheat-heat toxin. Huá shí and Tōng cǎo separate and disinhibit lower burner damp-heat. The emphasis of the formula is on clearing heat and resolving toxin, with diffusing the upper burner and percolating the lower burner supporting the action.
