Actions: Clears heat and disinhibits dampness; courses the liver and relieves pain; quickens the blood and disperses swelling.
Indications: Scrotal welling-abscess (yōng) due to damp-heat in the liver channel, characterized by red, hot, painful, swollen scrotum with smooth, skin, and accompanied with short voidings of reddish urine, and heat effusion and aversion to cold. Tongue: Red with slimy yellow fur. Pulse: Stringlike and rapid.
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: This formula is Lóng dǎn xiè gān tāng (龙胆泻肝汤 Gentian Liver-Draining Decoction) minus Chē qián zǐ, and plus Chuān xiōng, Bái sháo, and Tiān huā fěn. The Zhī zǐ, Huáng qín, and Lóng dǎn clear and drain heat toxin in the liver channel. Mù tōng Dēng xīn cǎo, and Zé xiè clear and disinhibit damp toxin in the lower burner. These agents together have the action of separating and disinhibiting damp-heat, thereby eliminating the downpour of damp-heat in the liver channel. Dāng guī, Shēng dì huáng, Bái sháo, and Chuān xiōng combined with Chái hú quicken the blood and disperse swelling, as well as coursing the liver and relieving pain. In particular, Dāng guī and Shēng dì huáng also dispel stasis. Gān cǎo clears heat and resolves toxin.
