Rectifying Poria Decoction

理苓汤 〔理苓湯〕 lǐ líng tāng

Ingredients

Actions: Warms the center and dries dampness; promotes qì transformation and disinhibits water.

Indications: Spleen-stomach vacuity and exuberant internal water-damp, manifesting in the form of cold limbs, water swelling, inhibited urination, abdominal distension, torpid intake, nausea, vomiting and retching, bland taste in the mouth, and sloppy stool. Tongue: Pale with glossy white fur. Pulse: Sunken and slow.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: lizhongtangwarms the center and disperses the cold, fortifies the spleen and dries dampness. Wǔ líng sǎn (五苓散 Poria Five Powder)warms the bladder and promotes the transformative action of it qì, thereby disinhibiting water and transforming turbidity. The Guì zhī and Gān jiāng provide a powerful center-warming and cold-dispersing action. Rén shēn—or Dǎng shēn—and Gān cǎo ensure that the water-disinhibiting action of Zé xiè and Zhū líng does not damage yīn.

Notes: This is a combination of lizhongtang and Wǔ líng sǎn (五苓散 Poria Five Powder).
