Actions: Clears heat and transforms phlegm; opens the orifices and stabilizes fright.
Indications: Child fright wind arising when exuberant internal phlegm-heat blocks the orifices of the heart. Signs include heat effusion, rough breathing, phlegm rale, vexation and agitation, clouded spirit, and convulsions. Tongue: Red with a glossy white or thin yellow fur. Pulse: Stringlike and slippery and stringlike and rapid.
Method: Grind to a fine powder, and form into pills each weighing 0.09g.
Rationale: Niú huáng is cool and bitter, and has an aromatic qì. It clears heat and resolves toxin, as well as sweeping phlegm and opening the orifices. Shè xiāng opens the orifices and arouses the spirit. Tiān zhú huáng, Dǎn xīng, and Chuān bèi mǔ clear heat and transform phlegm. Dà huáng combined with a small amount of Gān cǎo clears heat and drains fire, eliminating accumulation and abducting stagnation. Zhū shā is a heavy settler that quiets the spirit and helps the Niú huáng to clear the heart and settle fright. Gōu téng, Tiān má, Quán xiē, and Jiāng cán extinguish wind and settle tetany.
