Coursing wind
疏风 〔疏風〕 shū fēng
A method of treatment used to disperse wind evil with wind-eliminating exterior-resolving medicinals. Wind is a major cause of externally contracted exterior patterns because other evils easily combine with it to enter the body. Hence, treatment of exterior patterns frequently requires wind-coursing action.
Medicinal therapy: Wind-coursing medicinals used for wind-cold include saposhnikovia (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 防风 fáng fēng), cinnamon twig (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 桂枝 guì zhī), and Chinese lovage (Ligustici Rhizoma, 藁本 gǎo běn); ones used for wind-heat include mint (Menthae Herba, 薄荷 bò hé) and arctium (Arctii Fructus, 牛蒡子 niú bàng zǐ); ones used for wind-damp include notopterygium (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 羌活 qiāng huó) and Dahurian angelica (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, 白芷 bái zhǐ). Wind-coursing medicinals generally have a mild sweat-effusing effect, and hence differ from powerful sweat-effusing exterior-resolving medicinals such as ephedra (Ephedrae Herba, 麻黄 má huáng).
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on GB, TB, LU, and LI. Main points: GV-20 (Hundred Convergences, 百会 bǎi huì), GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), and TB-5 (Outer Pass, 外关 wài guān).
Point selection according to signs: For wind-cold, add LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ) and LU-7 (Broken Sequence, 列缺 liè quē); needle with drainage and add moxa. For wind-heat, add GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), LU-11 (Lesser Shang, 少商 shào shāng), and LI-1 (Shang Yáng, 商阳 shāng yáng); needle with drainage or prick to bleed with a three-edged needle. For wind-damp, add LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), and SP-9 (Yīn Mound Spring, 阴陵泉 yīn líng quán), needling with drainage.
