Congealed-fat screen

凝脂翳 〔凝脂翳〕níng zhī yì

An external obstruction of the eye that has the appearance of congealed lard and that in severe cases can cause loss of sight. Congealed-fat screen develops swiftly and is attended by acute eye pain and pain in the brow, redness of the eyes, hot tears, and copious discharge. It is attributable to externally contracted wind-heat toxin invading and contending contending with intense internal liver-gallbladder fire and binding in the eye.

Biomedical correspondence: observed in suppurative keratitis.

Medicinal therapy: Use Gentian Liver-Draining Decoction (龙胆泻肝汤 lóng dǎn xiè gān tāng) plus dandelion (Taraxaci Herba, 蒲公英 pú gōng yīng), antelope horn (Saigae Tataricae Cornu, 羚羊角 líng yáng jiǎo), rhubarb (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 大黄 dà huáng), and moutan (Moutan Cortex, 牡丹皮 mǔ dān pí).

Acumoxatherapy: Select BL-2 (Bamboo Gathering, 攒竹 zǎn zhú), BL-1 (Bright Eyes, 睛明 jīng míng), GB-1 (Pupil Bone-Hole, 瞳子髎 tóng zǐ liáo), GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), GB-41 (Foot Overlooking Tears, 足临泣 zú lín qì), Thumb Bone Hollow (大骨空 dà gǔ kōng), Little Finger Bone Hollow (小骨空 xiǎo gǔ kōng), LR-2 (Moving Between, 行间 xíng jiān), GB-43 (Pinched Ravine, 侠溪 xiá xī), and GB-34 (Yáng Mound Spring, 阳陵泉 yáng líng quán). Needle with drainage.
