BL-1 Bright Eyes

睛明 〔睛明〕 jīng míng

Alternate names: 精明 jīng míng, Bright Essence; 泪孔 lèi kǒng, Tear Hole; 泪腔 lèi qiāng, Tear Cavity; 目内眦 mù nèi zì, Inner Canthus; 内眦外 nèi zì wài, Outside the Inner Canthus

Channel: BL, foot greater yáng (tài yáng) bladder channel; shared point on the yáng springing (yáng qiāo) vessel; shared point on the yīn springing (yīn qiāo) vessel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the face, 0.1 cùn directly above the inner canthus of the eye, in the space between the eyeball and the bones forming the medial orbit.

Classical location: In the depression one fēn outward from the inner canthus. From The Golden Mirror of Medicine (医宗金鑑 yī zōng jīn jiàn)

Local anatomy: The angular artery and vein; deeper, superiorly, the ophthalmic artery and vein. Superficially, the supratrochlear and infratrochlear nerves; deeper, branches of the oculomotor nerve, the opthalmic nerve.

Action: Courses wind and discharges heat; nourishes water and brightens the eyes.

Modern indications: Painful red swollen eyes; tearing; unclear vision; night blindness; color blindness.

Classical indications: Abhorrence of cold with headache; dizzy vision; nearsightedness.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3 cùn perpendicular insertion along the orbital wall.

Warning: Moxa contraindicated.

Point groups: Intersection point (jiāo huì xué) of the hand and foot greater yáng (tài yáng) (SI and BL) and stomach channels and the yīn and yáng springing vessel (yáng qiāo mài)s.
