Clearing heat and transforming phlegm

清热化痰 〔清熱化痰〕qīng rè huà tán

Also clearing and transforming heat phlegm. A method of treatment used to address heat phlegm, which arises when heat congests the lung and manifests as inhibited cough, expectoration of thick yellow phlegm, red facial complexion, heat vexation, red tongue with yellow fur, etc.

Medicinal therapy: Heat-clearing phlegm-transforming medicinals include lepidium/descurainiae (Lepidii/Descurainiae Semen, 葶苈子 tíng lì zǐ), scutellaria (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩 huáng qín), mulberry root bark (Mori Cortex, 桑白皮 sāng bái pí), trichosanthes rind (Trichosanthis Pericarpium, 栝楼皮 guā lóu pí), Zhejiang fritillaria (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus, 浙贝母 zhè bèi mǔ), and phragmites (Phragmitis Rhizoma, 芦根 lú gēn). Formulas include Qì-Clearing Phlegm-Transforming Pill (清气化痰丸 qīng qì huà tán wán) and Gallbladder-Warming Decoction (温胆汤 wēn dǎn tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on back transport points, LU, LI, and ST. Needle with drainage at BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù), LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí) LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), LU-10 (Fish Border, 鱼际 yú jì), LU-9 (Great Abyss, 太渊 tài yuān), SP-3 (Supreme White, 太白 tài bái), and ST-40 (Bountiful Bulge, 丰隆 fēng lóng).
