Qì-Clearing Phlegm-Transforming Pill
清气化痰丸 〔清氣化痰丸〕qīng qì huà tán wán

Ingredients:
- Bàn xià (半夏 Pinelliae Rhizoma, pinellia [rhizome]) 10g
- Dǎn xīng (胆星 Arisaema cum Bile , bile [-processed] arisaema [root]) 12g
- Zhǐ shí (枳实 Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, unripe bitter orange) 10g
- Xìng rén (杏仁 Armeniacae Semen, apricot kernel) 10g
- Fú líng (茯苓 Poria , poria) 10g
- Jú hóng (橘红 Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum, red tangerine peel) 10g
- Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) 10g
- Guā lóu rén shuāng (瓜蒌仁霜 Trichosanthis Seminis Pulvis, trichosanthes seed frost) 12g
- Shēng jiāng (生姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger) 3 slices
Action: Clears qì and transforms phlegm.

Method: Grind to a powder, mix with ginger juice, and form into pills.
Dosage: Take 6g twice daily with warm water.
Rationale: Dǎn xīng both transforms phlegm and clears heat and, for this reason, is used in large quantities as the sovereign agent. Guā lóu zǐ and Huáng qín clear the lung and transform phlegm, thus helping the action of Dǎn xīng. Zhǐ shí and Chén pí are qì rectifiers that enhance phlegm dispersion and help the Guā lóu zǐ to relieve cough. Bàn xià dries dampness and transforms phlegm, and with Tiān nán xīng and Shēng jiāng dispels phlegm that has already formed. Fú líng percolates dampness and fortifies the spleen, Thus, preventing the development of phlegm. Xìng rén diffuses and downbears lung qì, thereby relieving cough, and with Guā lóu zǐ has a stool-freeing action that helps to relieve cough.
