Wind-cold cough

风寒咳嗽 〔風寒咳嗽〕fēng hán ké sòu

Cough attributed to wind-cold invading the lung, causing nondiffusion of lung qì. Wind-cold cough is associated with thin phlegm, nasal congestion and runny nose, heavy voice, headache, joint pain, heat effusion and aversion to cold without sweating, white tongue fur, and a floating pulse.

Medicinal therapy: Course wind and disperse cold; diffuse lung qì. Use Inula Powder (金沸草散 jīn fèi cǎo sǎn) or Apricot Kernel and Perilla Powder (杏苏散 xìng sū sǎn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LU and LI. Select BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù), LU-7 (Broken Sequence, 列缺 liè quē), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), BL-12 (Wind Gate, 风门 fēng mén), CV-22 (Celestial Chimney, 天突 tiān tú), and ST-40 (Bountiful Bulge, 丰隆 fēng lóng); needle with drainage and, if appropriate, add moxa. Apply moxibustion or fire cupping at BL-11 (Great Shuttle, 大杼 dà zhù).
