Action: Disperses wind-cold; downbears qì, transforms phlegm and relieves cough.
Indication: External contraction of wind-cold with cough and expectoration of copious amounts of thin drool-like phlegm,
Category: Phlegm-dispelling formulas / Wind-relieving phlegm-transforming formula
Method:
Rationale: Jīn fèi cǎo is acrid, bitter, and salty; it courses the exterior and relieves cough, as well as transforming phlegm and eliminating dampness. Jīng jiè suì and Xì xīn combined with inula disperse wind-cold and effuse the exterior evil. Bàn xià, Shēng jiāng, and Fú líng work with these two agents to disinhibit water and disperse phlegm-rheum. Qián hú downbears qì, and although it is bitter, acrid and slightly cold, when combined with Shēng jiāng and Dà zǎo, it can harmonize provisioning and defense helping to expel the evil. The chief action of the formula is transforming rheum and relieving cough, supported by exterior-resolving and cold-dispersing action.
