Action: Transforms phlegm and extinguishes wind; fortifies the spleen and dries dampness.
Indication: Dizziness and headache, copious phlegm, and oppression in the chest. Tongue fur: White and slimy.
Category: Phlegm-dispelling formulas / Wind-relieving phlegm-transforming formula
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Bàn xià dries dampness and transforms phlegm turbidity. Tiān má extinguishes wind and eliminates dizziness. The two agents are complementary in the treatment of wind-phlegm dizziness. Bái zhú and Fú líng fortify the spleen and dispel dampness, thereby eliminating the source of the phlegm. Chén pí disinhibits qì and transforms phlegm, enhancing Bàn xià's effect of drying dampness and transforming phlegm. Chén pí combined with Bái zhú and Fú líng can also fortify the spleen and stomach, thereby helping to eliminate the source of the phlegm. Shēng jiāng with Tiān má enhances the phlegm-transforming and wind-extinguishing action, as well as resolving Tiān má's toxin. Gān cǎo and Dà zǎo help to fortify the spleen.
