Vacuity tetany

虚痉 〔虛痙〕 xū jìng

Tetany (jìng) attributed to extreme qì and blood vacuity depriving the sinews of nourishment or to major loss of blood. Vacuity tetany is characterized by convulsions, clouded head and flowery vision, spontaneous sweating, lassitude of spirit, shortness of breath, pale tongue, and a fine stringlike pulse.

Medicinal therapy: Treat by boosting qì and supplementing the blood, supported by extinguishing wind. Appropriate formulas include Chinese Angelica Blood-Supplementing Decoction (当归补血汤 dāng guī bǔ xuè tāng) or Eight-Gem Decoction (八珍汤 bā zhēn tāng) with the addition of uncaria (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis, 钩藤 gōu téng) and scorpion tail (Buthi Caudex, 蝎梢 xiē shāo).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on back transport points, GV, SP, ST, and LR. Select BL-17 (Diaphragm Transport, 膈俞 gé shù), BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), GV-20 (Hundred Convergences, 百会 bǎi huì), GV-16 (Wind Mansion, 风府 fēng fǔ), LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng), and GV-8 (Sinew Contraction, 筋缩 jīn suō); needle with supplementation and moxa if appropriate.
