Chinese Angelica Blood-Supplementing Decoction

当归补血汤 〔當歸補血湯〕dāng guī bǔ xuè tāng

Ingredients:

Action: Supplements qì and engenders blood.

Indication: (a) Taxation fatigue and internal damage giving rise to dual vacuity of qì and blood with yáng qì floating astray, characterized by heat in the flesh and red face, vexation and thirst with desire for fluids, and a pulse that is surging, large, and vacuous; (b) blood vacuity due to loss of blood in women from menstruation or childbirth, with heat effusion and headache; (c) sores that fail to heal after rupturing.

Method: Decoct with water.

Warnings: Contraindicated in yīn vacuity with effulgent fire.

Rationale: Blood is the mother of qì and qì is the commander of the blood. Dāng guī supplements the blood, while Huáng qí supplements qì, enhancing the source of qì and blood formation. The source book prescribes this formula for heat effusion in yīn blood depletion stemming from insufficiency of original qì. It is contraindicated in yīn vacuity with effulgent fire.
