Summerheat cough

暑咳 〔暑咳〕shǔ ké

Cough due to damage to the lung by summerheat. Summerheat cough is characterized by cough without phlegm or with scant foamy phlegm, rapid breathing, generalized heat, red face, thirst, oppression in the chest and rib-side pain, and a rapid slippery soggy pulse.

Medicinal therapy: Treat by clearing the lung and resolving summerheat. Use Gypsum and Anemarrhena Decoction (石膏知母汤 shí gāo zhī mǔ tāng) or White-Draining Origin-Boosting Powder (泻白益元散 xiè bái yì yuán sǎn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LU, LI, ST, and PC. Select LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), CV-17 (Chest Center, 膻中 shān zhōng), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), LU-1 (Central Treasury, 中府 zhōng fǔ), and PC-7 (Great Mound, 大陵 dà líng); needle with drainage. For rib-side pain, add GB-34 (Yáng Mound Spring, 阳陵泉 yáng líng quán). For thirst, add Gold Liquid and Jade Humor (金津玉液 jīn jīn yù yè), and KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi).
