Qì swelling

气肿 〔氣腫〕qì zhǒng

1. Water swelling with signs of qì depression. Qì swelling is caused by qì stagnation and damp depression. Accompanying signs include somber skin complexion, emaciation, and fullness and distension in the abdomen and rib-side, sometimes with abdominal pain stretching into the rib-side. The swelling may occur suddenly and may spread from the upper body downward. The skin feels thick to the touch, and the swelling rebounds after pressure is relieved.

Medicinal therapy: Rectify qì and transform dampness; disperse swelling and eliminate fullness. Use Tangerine Peel Decocted Pill (橘皮煎丸 jú pí jiān wán).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on CV, back transport points, ST, PC, LR, and SP. Select CV-9 (Water Divide, 水分 shuǐ fēn), CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi), BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù), BL-22 (Triple Burner Transport, 三焦俞 sān jiāo shù), ST-25 (Celestial Pivot, 天枢 tiān shū), PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), TB-6 (Branch Ditch, 支沟 zhī gōu), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), and SP-9 (Yīn Mound Spring, 阴陵泉 yīn líng quán); needle with drainage and add moxa. 2. Local painful swelling of the skin. The Origin and Indicators of Disease (诸病源候论 zhū bìng yuán hòu lùn, qì zhǒng hòu). states, Qì swelling is like a welling-abscess without a head, marked by vacuity swelling, no change in skin color, and painful tautness in the skin that hurts whenever it is pressed. This is caused by wind evil binding contending with qì. See repletion swelling.

3. Vacuous puffiness.
