Qì goiter

气瘿 〔氣癭〕qì yǐng

A goiter that is soft to the touch and of normal skin color and that swells and shrinks with the patient’s moods. Qì goiter is attributed to emotional depression or environmental factors.

Biomedical correspondence: endemic goiter.

Medicinal therapy: Rectify qì and resolve depression; transform phlegm and soften hardness; fortify the spleen and eliminate dampness. Use Four Seas Depression-Soothing Pill (四海舒郁丸 sì hǎi shū yù wán) or Sargassum Jade Flask Decoction (海藻玉壶汤 hǎi zǎo yù hú tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on TB, ST, LI, GB, and empirical points. Select TB-13 (Upper Arm Convergence, 臑会 nào huì), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), GB-34 (Yáng Mound Spring, 阳陵泉 yáng líng quán), CV-22 (Celestial Chimney, 天突 tiān tú), LI-17 (Celestial Tripod, 天鼎 tiān dǐng), and SI-17 (Celestial Countenance, 天容 tiān róng); needle with even supplementation and drainage. For thyroid enlargement, add Qì Goiter (气瘿 qì yǐng) and the paravertebrals of the neck (3-5).
