Action: Disperses goiter and binds; transforms phlegm and softens hardness.
Indication: Soft, round, slow-growing goiter (flesh goiter) on the lower anterior part of the neck, caused by congealing phlegm and stagnant qì. Pulse: Stringlike.
Category: Dispersion formulas / Concretion and conglomeration formulas
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Hǎi zǎo, Kūn bù, eelgrass, and Zhè bèi mǔ disperse phlegm binds and goiter. Chén pí and Qīng pí move qì and resolve depression. Lián qiào is included to drain the heat that develops with the binding depression of qì and phlegm over long periods, and to help disperse binds. Chuān xiōng and Dāng guī are mobile agents (zǒu ér bù shǒu) that work with Chén pí and Qīng pí to move qì and quicken the blood and that combine with Hǎi zǎo and Hǎi dài to disperse phlegm and disperse binds. Bàn xià and Dú huó are warm dry agents that dispel dampness and complement the cold, salty hardness-softening properties of Hǎi zǎo and Kūn bù. Gān cǎo plays no significant role in the formula.
