Qì cough

气嗽 〔氣嗽〕qì sòu

1. Cough with inhibited qì dynamic and fullness and oppression in the chest and diaphragm, attributed to lung vacuity and congestion of evil qì.

Medicinal therapy: Diffuse the lung and transform phlegm; support right and dispel the evil. Use formulas such as Schisandra Powder (五味子散 wǔ wèi zǐ sǎn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LU, CV, PC, LI, and ST. Supplement BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù), LU-7 (Broken Sequence, 列缺 liè quē), LU-9 (Great Abyss, 太渊 tài yuān), and SP-3 (Supreme White, 太白 tài bái); drain CV-22 (Celestial Chimney, 天突 tiān tú), CV-17 (Chest Center, 膻中 shān zhōng), PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), ST-40 (Bountiful Bulge, 丰隆 fēng lóng), and ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ).

2. Cough attributed to internal damage by the seven affects, characterized by cough and rapid breathing, thick sticky phlegm that may be like rotten threads, a feeling of something stuck in the throat that can be neither brought up nor swallowed, and a rapid slippery surging floating pulse.

Medicinal therapy: Transform phlegm and resolve depression with formulas such as Perilla Fruit Qì-Downbearing Decoction (苏子降气汤 sū zǐ jiàng qì tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LU, CV, PC, LR, SP, and ST. Select BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù), LU-7 (Broken Sequence, 列缺 liè quē), CV-22 (Celestial Chimney, 天突 tiān tú), PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), ST-40 (Bountiful Bulge, 丰隆 fēng lóng), and BL-18 (Liver Transport, 肝俞 gān shù); needle with drainage.
