Phlegm malaria

痰疟 〔痰瘧〕tán nüè

Malaria with signs of depressed phlegm. Phlegm malaria is characterized by alternating heat and cold with more heat effusion than cold, headache, twitching of the flesh, vomiting of phlegm-drool, and a slippery stringlike pulse. In severe cases, there may be coma and convulsions.

Biomedical correspondence: cerebral malaria.

Medicinal therapy: Transform phlegm and eliminate malaria using formulas such as Bupleurum Stomach-Calming Brew (柴平煎 chái píng jiān) or Phlegm-Abducting Decoction (导痰汤 dǎo tán tāng) and variations. Exuberant heat with abdominal fullness and dry bound stool can be precipitated with Major Bupleurum Decoction (大柴胡汤 dà chái hú tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on GV, SI, PC, CV, and ST. Select GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), GV-13 (Kiln Path, 陶道 táo dào), SI-3 (Back Ravine, 后溪 hòu xī), PC-5 (Intermediary Courier, 间使 jiān shǐ), CV-12 (Center Stomach Duct, 中脘 zhōng wǎn), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), and ST-40 (Bountiful Bulge, 丰隆 fēng lóng); needle with drainage. For exuberant heat with abdominal fullness and dry bound stool, add ST-44 (Inner Court, 内庭 nèi tíng), ST-25 (Celestial Pivot, 天枢 tiān shū), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), and LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí),
