Malaria with signs of depressed phlegm. Phlegm malaria is characterized by alternating heat and cold with more heat effusion than cold, headache, twitching of the flesh, vomiting of phlegm-drool, and a slippery stringlike pulse. In severe cases, there may be coma and convulsions.
Biomedical correspondence: cerebral malaria.
Medicinal therapy: Transform phlegm and eliminate malaria using formulas such as Bupleurum Stomach-Calming Brew (柴平煎chái píng jiān) or Phlegm-Abducting Decoction (导痰汤dǎo tán tāng) and variations. Exuberant heat with abdominal fullness and dry bound stool can be precipitated with Major Bupleurum Decoction (大柴胡汤dà chái hú tāng).
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on GV, SI, PC, CV, and ST. Select GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), GV-13 (Kiln Path, 陶道 táo dào), SI-3 (Back Ravine, 后溪 hòu xī), PC-5 (Intermediary Courier, 间使 jiān shǐ), CV-12 (Center Stomach Duct, 中脘 zhōng wǎn), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), and ST-40 (Bountiful Bulge, 丰隆 fēng lóng); needle with drainage. For exuberant heat with abdominal fullness and dry bound stool, add ST-44 (Inner Court, 内庭 nèi tíng), ST-25 (Celestial Pivot, 天枢 tiān shū), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), and LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí),
