Opening the stomach

开胃 〔開胃〕 kāi wèi

Also increasing food intake; opening the stomach and increasing food intake. To increase the appetite. The stomach governs [food] intake. This function is related to the spleen, since the spleen moves the fluids of the stomach. Opening the stomach thus means increasing the stomach’s intake of food. Commonly used stomach-opening medicinals include barley sprout (Hordei Fructus Germinatus, 麦芽 mài yá), crataegus (Crataegi Fructus, 山楂 shān zhā), millet sprout (Setariae Fructus Germinatus, 谷芽 gǔ yá), and gizzard lining (Galli Gigeriae Endothelium Corneum, 鸡内金 jī nèi jīn). An example of a stomach-opening formula is Peanut Gruel (落花生粥 luò huā shēng zhōu).
