Peanut Gruel
落花生粥 〔落花生粥〕 luò huā shēng zhōu

Ingredients
- Luò huā shēng (落花生 Arachidis Semen, peanut [kernel]) 45g
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice) 60g
- Bīng táng (冰糖 Saccharon Crystallinum, rock candy) (to taste)
- Shān yào (山药 Dioscoreae Rhizoma, dioscorea [root]) 30g
- Má huáng (麻黄 Ephedrae Herba, ephedra) (optional)
- Bǎi hé (百合 Lilii Bulbus, lily bulb) 15 gr (optional)
Actions: Fortifies the spleen and increases appetite; moistens the lung and relieves cough; nourishes the blood and promotes lactation.
Indications: Lung dryness cough with little or no phlegm; spleen vacuity and stomach reflux; anemia; insufficient breast milk.
Method: Crush the raw peanuts (with the reddish seed-coat left on), add rice, and slices of dioscorea or lily bulb if desired, and boil together into a gruel. Add sugar before the end.
Rationale: Luò huā shēng is sweet and balanced, and enters the lung and spleen channels. It moistens the lung, fortifies the spleen, harmonizes the stomach, and promotes lactation. Shān yào helps to fortify the spleen and nourish the stomach. Bǎi hé is a good addition for patients suffering from dry cough, since it moistens the lung and relieves cough.
