十九畏 〔十九畏〕shí jiǔ wèi

Nineteen medicinals standing in a relationship in which the toxicity or action of one is counteracted or reduced by another or others. See the list below. See also seven relations.

The Nineteen Fears

  • Sulfur (Sulphur, 石硫黄 shí liú huáng), fears impure mirabilite (Mirabilitum Non-Purum, 朴硝 pò xiāo)
  • Mercury (Hydrargyrum, 水银 shuǐ yín) fears sublimed arsenic (Arsenicum Sublimatum, 砒霜 pī shuāng)
  • Chinese wolfsbane (Stellerae seu Euphorbiae Radix, 狼毒 láng dú) fears litharge (Lithargyrum, 密陀僧 mì tuó sēng)
  • Croton (Crotonis Fructus, 巴豆 bā dòu) fears morning glory (Pharbitidis Semen, 牵牛子 qiān niú zǐ)
  • Clove (Caryophylli Flos, 丁香 dīng xiāng) fears curcuma (Curcumae Radix, 郁金 yù jīn)
  • Tooth niter (Nitrum Dentatum, 牙硝 yá xiāo), fears sparganium (Sparganii Rhizoma, 三棱 sān léng)
  • Aconite main tuber (Aconiti Radix, 川乌头 chuān wū tóu) and wild aconite (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix, 草乌头 cǎo wū tóu) fear rhinoceros horn (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 犀角 xī jiǎo)
  • Ginseng (Ginseng Radix, 人参 rén shēn) fears flying squirrel’s droppings (Trogopteri Faeces, 五灵脂 wǔ líng zhī)
  • Cinnamon bark (Cinnamomi Cortex, 肉桂 ròu guì) fears halloysite (Halloysitum Rubrum, 赤石脂 chì shí zhī)
