Origin in PRC Pharmacopoeia: Pò xiāo, like mangxiao, comes from a mineral salt consisting mainly of sodium sulfate decahydrate (Na₂SO₄·10H₂O); it differs by being unprocessed.

Use: Medicinal

Category: Draining-precipitant agents / Offensive precipitant agents

Properties: Acrid, bitter, and salty; cold.

Channel entry: Stomach and large intestine channels.

Indications:

Drains heat and frees the stool; moistens dryness and softens hardness; clears heat and resolves toxin. Softer in substance but has the same actions as Máng xiāo (芒硝 Natrii Sulfas , mirabilite).

repletion heat accumulation with abdominal distension and constipation; phlegm accumulation; sore red eyes; swollen welling-abscesses (yōng zhǒng).

Dosage & Method: Mostly used topically.
