Phlegm accumulation

痰积 〔痰積〕tán jī

Accumulation of phlegm turbidity in the chest and diaphragm characterized by copious thick phlegm that is difficult to expectorate, dizziness, oppression in the chest with dull pain, and a slippery stringlike pulse.

Medicinal therapy: Open the chest and flush phlegm with formulas such as Phlegm-Abducting Decoction (导痰汤 dǎo tán tāng) or Bamboo Sap Phlegm-Moving Pill (竹沥运痰丸 zhú lì yùn tán wán). When signs are severe, but both body and qì are replete, Drool-Controlling Elixir (控涎丹 kòng xián dān) may be used. For phlegm accumulating in the throat, ejection may be considered.

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on CV, ST, and PC. Select CV-12 (Center Stomach Duct, 中脘 zhōng wǎn), CV-17 (Chest Center, 膻中 shān zhōng), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), ST-40 (Bountiful Bulge, 丰隆 fēng lóng), LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ), CV-22 (Celestial Chimney, 天突 tiān tú), CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi), and PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān); needle with drainage and add moxa.

Point selection according to signs: For dizziness, add ST-8 (Head Corner, 头维 tóu wéi), and ST-41 (Ravine Divide, 解溪 jiě xī).
