A gastrointestinal disease in infants due to damage by milk and other foods.
Simple milk accumulation arises when in response to persistent crying the mother is overeager to feed the child. Spleen-stomach vacuity may be a factor preventing the child from digesting milk properly. There are signs such as vexation and crying, unquiet sleep, hot breath, smell of sour milk in the mouth, vomiting of undigested milk, and diarrhea or constipation.
Medicinal therapy: Disperse milk and harmonize the stomach with Harmony-Preserving Pill (保和丸bǎo hé wán) prepared as a decoction.
Milk and food accumulation is characterized by poor stomach intake, glomus in the stomach duct and abdominal distension, and in some cases tidal heat, and gradual emaciation.
Medicinal therapy: First treat the tip by dispersing accumulations and abducting stagnation with variations of Harmony-Preserving Pill (保和丸bǎo hé wán) and Stomach-Calming Powder (平胃散píng wèi sǎn). Then treat the root by regulating the stomach and spleen with Ginseng, Poria, and White Atractylodes Powder (参苓白朮散shēn líng bái zhú sǎn).
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment for either pattern mainly on CV, ST, and SP. Main points: CV-12 (Center Stomach Duct, 中脘 zhōng wǎn), ST-25 (Celestial Pivot, 天枢 tiān shū), and ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ). For the treatment of simple milk accumulation, add GB-34 (Yáng Mound Spring, 阳陵泉 yáng líng quán). Needle with drainage for refusal to take milk; add BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù) and CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi), needling with supplementation and adding moxa for spleen-stomach vacuity. For the treatment of milk and food accumulation, add Lǐ Inner Court (里内庭lǐ nèi tíng), SP-2 (Great Metropolis, 大都 dà dū), and ST-41 (Ravine Divide, 解溪 jiě xī), needling with drainage. Massage and spine pinching is also effective.
