Freeing milk
通乳 〔通乳〕 tōng rǔ
Also promoting lactaction. A method of treatment used to promote the flow of breast milk after delivery. Freeing milk takes one of two forms.
Supplementing qì and blood (补气血 bǔ qì xuè): This is used to treat patients with qì and blood vacuity and little or no milk, but without distension or pain in the breasts. General signs include pale complexion and nails, pale tongue without fur, and a fine vacuous pulse.
Medicinal therapy: Agents used include codonopsis (Codonopsis Radix, 党参 dǎng shēn), astragalus (Astragali Radix, 黄芪 huáng qí), Chinese angelica (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 当归 dāng guī), ophiopogon (Ophiopogonis Radix, 麦门冬 mài mén dōng), platycodon (Platycodonis Radix, 桔梗 jié gěng), vaccaria (Vaccariae Semen, 王不留行 wáng bù liú xíng), and rice-paper plant pith (Tetrapanacis Medulla, 通草 tōng cǎo).
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on ST and LR. Select CV-17 (Chest Center, 膻中 shān zhōng), ST-18 (Breast Root, 乳根 rǔ gēn), SI-1 (Lesser Marsh, 少泽 shào zé), BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù), and ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ); needle with supplementation. Moxa can also be added. If due to excessive blood loss in childbirth, add BL-18 (Liver Transport, 肝俞 gān shù) and BL-17 (Diaphragm Transport, 膈俞 gé shù).
Moving qì and freeing the network vessels (行气通络 xíng qì tōng luò): This is used to treat qì stagnation and breast milk stoppage with distension and fullness of the breasts, thin tongue fur, and stringlike pulse.
Medicinal therapy: Agents used include Chinese angelica (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 当归 dāng guī), chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 川芎 chuān xiōng), bupleurum (Bupleuri Radix, 柴胡 chái hú), cyperus (Cyperi Rhizoma,

CV-17 (Chest Center, 膻中 shān zhōng), ST-18 (Breast Root, 乳根 rǔ gēn), SI-1 (Lesser Marsh, 少泽 shào zé), PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), LR-14 (Cycle Gate, 期门 qī mén), and LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng); needle with even supplementation and drainage.
