ST-18 Breast Root

乳根 〔乳根〕 rǔ gēn

Alternate names: 薜息 bì xī, Hemp Breathing

Channel: ST, foot yáng brightness (yáng míng) stomach channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the chest, in the fifth intercostal space, on the midclavicular line.

Classical location: In the depression one cùn and six fēn below Breast Center (ST-17), four cùn either side of the midline. The point is found in supine posture. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: The branches of the intercostal artery and vein. The branch of the 5th intercostal nerve.

Action: Diffuses the network vessels of the breast; quickens the blood and transforms depression.

Modern indications: Cough; panting; hiccup; chest pain; mammary welling-abscess (rǔ yōng); scant breast milk.

Classical indications: Cough and counterflow and hasty breathing; pain and swelling of the breast; pain and oppression below the chest; dysphagia-occlusion (yē gé) with inability to get food and drink down; abdominal fullness; shortness of breath; belching; retention of the placenta.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3 cùn upward oblique insertion. Moxa: 5 cones; pole 5‒20 min.
