Aconite Gruel

附子粥 〔附子粥〕 fù zǐ zhōu

Ingredients

Actions: Warms the center, supplements yáng, disperses cold, and relieves pain.

Indications: Insufficiency of kidney yáng (debilitation of the life gate fire) with aversion to cold, cold limbs, impotence, and frequent urination; debilitation of spleen yáng with cold pain in the stomach duct and abdomen, and diarrhea. Also patterns of severe yáng debilitation due to profuse sweatingvomiting and retching, or diarrhea, characterized by counterflow cold of the limbs, cold sweats, bland taste in the mouth and absence of thirst, white tongue fur and faint fine pulse.

Method: Grind the aconite and dried ginger and add to ready made gruel with onions and sugar and cook together for a short time. Alternatively, add a strained decoction of the aconite and dried ginger.

Rationale: Fù zǐ is sweet and acrid and very hot. It returns yáng and supplements fire, disperses cold and relieves pain. Modern research shows that it is a powerful cardiotonic and hypertensor. Gān jiāng is hot and acrid. It warms the center and expels cold, returns yáng and frees the vessels. It is not as powerful as Fù zǐ, but its effect is longer lasting.
