Saposhnikovia Gruel
防风粥 〔防風粥〕 fáng fēng zhōu
Source: Qiān Jīn Yuè Lìng 千金月令
Ingredients
- Fáng fēng (防风 Saposhnikoviae Radix, saposhnikovia) 10–15g
- Cōng bái (葱白 Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, scallion white) 2 stalks
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice) 30–60g
Actions: Dispels wind and resolves the exterior; disperses cold and relieves pain.
Indications: External contraction of wind-cold with heat effusion, aversion to wind or cold, spontaneous sweating, headache, and aching body; wind-damp impediment (fēng shī bì) with joint pain; rumbling intestines and diarrhea.
Method: Add a strained decoction of the saposhnikovia and scallion white to ready-made gruel, and cook for a short time being serving.
Rationale: Fáng fēng is slightly aromatic and slight sweet. As its Chinese name guard against wind
suggests, it is used for external wind contraction. It dispels wind-cold and resolves the exterior and also dispels wind-damp (rheumatism) and relieves the pain associated with it. It is warm but not drying, but is mild in action. Cōng bái is a warm acrid agent that resolves the exterior, frees yáng, and resolves toxin. It enhances the action of Fáng fēng.
