Indication: Dysenteric wind (痢风 lì fēng) arising after dysentery from insufficiency of the liver and kidney and wind, cold, and dampness collecting and congealing in the sinews, bones, and vessels. Signs include joint pain, weak extremities, little strength to walk, and dizziness. Tongue: Red with white, glossy fur. Pulse: Sunken, fine, and forceless.
Category:
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Fáng fēng dispels wind-damp, but is moist. For this reason, it is chosen as the sovereign agent. Fù zǐ warms the channels and eliminates dampness, as well as dispersing cold and relieving pain. Qiāng huó dispels wind-damp and relieves impediment (bì) pain. These four agents combined eliminate the three evils and hence treat the tip of the condition. Chuān xiōng, Dāng guī, Bái sháo, and Shú dì huáng supplement the blood, and with Dù zhòng and Niú xī which supplement the kidney, help to make the sinew and bones strong. Dǎng shēn (or Rén shēn), Huáng qí, Bái zhú, and Gān cǎo boost qì and fortify the spleen, enabling it to nourish the sinews, bone, and channels and prevent recurrence of the condition.
