Chéng's Impediment-Alleviating Decoction
程氏蠲痹汤 〔程氏蠲痺湯〕 chéng shì juān bì tāng

Ingredients
- Qiāng huó (羌活 Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, notopterygium [root]) 9g
- Dú huó (独活 Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, pubescent angelica) 9g
- Guì zhī (桂枝 Cinnamomi Ramulus, cinnamon twig) 9g
- Qín jiāo (秦艽 Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, large gentian [root]) 9g
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 9g
- Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]) 6g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix-fried) 3g
- Hǎi fēng téng (海风藤 Piperis Kadsurae Caulis, kadsura pepper stem) 15g
- Sāng zhī (桑枝 Mori Ramulus, mulberry twig) 15g
- Rǔ xiāng (乳香 Olibanum , frankincense) 9g
- Mù xiāng (木香 Aucklandiae Radix, costusroot) 9g
Indications: Wind, cold, and dampness uniting to form impediment (bì);
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Qiāng huó and Dú huó eliminate wind, cold, and dampness, disinhibit the joints, and relieve pain. The former acts on the upper body and latter on the lower body. Chuān xiōng treats wind and blood conditions. Mù xiāng addresses pain. Dāng guī and Rǔ xiāng supplement and quickens the blood. Qín jiāo, Hǎi fēng téng, and Sāng zhī help to dispel wind-damp, and with Ròu guì help to free the channels.
Variations:
- Prevalence of wind: Add Qín jiāo (秦艽 Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, large gentian [root]) and Fáng fēng (防风 Saposhnikoviae Radix, saposhnikovia).
- Prevalence of cold: Add Fù zǐ (附子 Aconiti Radix Lateralis Praeparata, aconite [accessory root]).
- Prevalence of dampness: Add Fáng jǐ (防己 Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, fangji [root]), Bì xiè (萆薢 Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae seu Semptemlobae Rhizoma, fish poison yam), and Yì yǐ rén (薏苡仁 Coicis Semen, coix [seed]).
- Upper-body pain: Omit Dú huó (独活 Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, pubescent angelica) and add Jīng jiè (荆芥 Schizonepetae Herba, schizonepeta).
- Lower-body pain: Add Niú xī (牛膝 Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, achyranthes [root]).
- Damp-heat: Omit Ròu guì (肉桂 Cinnamomi Cortex, cinnamon bark) and add Huáng bǎi (黄柏 Phellodendri Cortex, phellodendron [bark]).
