Red Poria Decoction

赤苓汤 〔赤苓湯〕 chì líng tāng

Source: Jīn Guì Yì 金匮翼

Ingredients

Actions: Fortifies the spleen and percolates dampness; rectifies qì.

Indications: Leg qì (jiǎo qì) disease due to splenic movement and transformation failure of water-damp, manifesting in signs such as heaviness, numbness and tingling, a lack of strength in the legs, upwelling and nausea, and in severe cases upsurge of qì into the chest.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Fú líng and Fáng jǐ percolate dampness and disinhibit water. Fú líng also fortifies the spleen. Sāng bái pí and Má huáng downbear lung qì, and regulate the waterways, enhancing the water-disinhibiting action of Fú líng and Fáng jǐ to help disperse swelling, the tip of the condition. Bái zhú and Hēi dà dòu fortify the spleen and transform dampness. Chén pí and Shēng jiāng help the spleen-fortifying action of Fú líng. These agents therefore treat the root of damp damp leg qì (shī jiǎo qì), which is spleen vacuity. The perilla diffuses congestion and transforms dampness. The Xìng rén and inula downbear counterflow to prevent the leg qì (jiǎo qì) from surging upward.
