Numbness and tingling

麻木 〔麻木〕má mù

Loss of normal sensation in the skin and flesh. Numbness is described as the absence of itching or pain insensitive to pressure. Tingling is classically described as bugs crawling in the flesh unrelieved by pressure. See numbness and tingling of the skin.

Etymology

Chinmá, hemp, flax, linen (possibly from the feeling that linen produces on the skin); 木 mù, wood (probably from its being symbolic of insensitivity).
