Fetus-Quieting Beverage

安胎饮 〔安胎飲〕 ān tāi yǐn

Source: Jǐng Yuè Quán Shū 景岳全书

Ingredients

Actions: Supplements qì and fortifies the spleen; nourishes the blood and quiets the fetus.

Indications: Stirring fetus with lumbar pain and sagging in the smaller abdomen (i.e., the lower abdomen), and flooding and spotting. These signs are sometimes accompanied by dizziness, nausea and vomiting, and no thought of food and drink.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: The spleen is the source of blood and the liver stores the blood. If the spleen and liver are healthy, there is sufficient qì and blood to nourish the fetus. If the spleen is unhealthy, supplies of qì and blood are reduced, and there may be nausea and vomiting. When the liver is depressed, wind can stir internally which can manifest in the form of dizzy head or vision, and it can also overwhelm the spleen. When the liver fails to store the blood and the spleen fails to manage it, there is bleeding. Bái zhú, Fú líng, Huáng qí, and Gān cǎo supplement the center and boost qì. Bàn xià harmonizes the stomach. ē jiāo supplements the liver and nourishes the blood. Dì yú cools the blood and stanches bleeding, while Chuān xiōng relieves liver depression.
