Liver-Coursing Spleen-Rectifying Decoction

疏肝理脾汤 〔疏肝理脾湯〕 shū gān lǐ pí tāng

Ingredients

Actions: Courses the liver and rectifies the spleen; nourishes and quickens the blood.

Indications: Binding depression of liver qì and spleen vacuity, giving rise to blood vacuity and blood stasis characterized by rib-side pain, heart vexation, insomnia, fatigue, oppression in the stomach duct, poor appetite, and thin sloppy stool. Often used for what biomedicine terms chronic hepatitis and early-stage cirrhosis.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: The sovereign agents are Chái hú, which courses the liver and resolves depression, and Bái zhú which fortifies the spleen and eliminates dampness. The minister agents are Xiāng fù which rectifies qì and courses the liver, Hé shǒu wū, which supplements the blood and nourishes the liver, and Dǎng shēn, which fortifies the spleen and boosts qì. The assistants are Dān shēn, which nourishes and quickens the blood, Sān qī, which quickens the blood and transforms stasis, and Zé xiè which disinhibits water and fosters yīn.
