Ingredients

• Lián qiào (连翘 Forsythiae Fructus, forsythia [fruit])
• Zhī zǐ (栀子 Gardeniae Fructus, gardenia [fruit])
• Qiāng huó (羌活 Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, notopterygium [root])
• Xuán shēn (玄参 Scrophulariae Radix, scrophularia [root])
• Bò hé (薄荷 Menthae Herba, mint)
• Fáng fēng (防风 Saposhnikoviae Radix, saposhnikovia)
• Chái hú (柴胡 Bupleuri Radix, bupleurum [root])
• Jié gěng (桔梗 Platycodonis Radix, platycodon [root])
• Shēng má (升麻 Cimicifugae Rhizoma, cimicifuga [root])
• Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome])
• Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica)
• Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root])
• Chì sháo (赤芍 Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony [root])
• Niú bàng zǐ (牛蒡子 Arctii Fructus, arctium [seed])

Actions: Disperses swelling, clears heat, and resolves toxin; quickens the blood and disperses binds.

Indications: Cold damage in which the evil, not completely eliminated by sweating or precipitation, binds beneath the ear to form a hard swelling known as jowl effusion (fā yí).

• Thirst: Add Tiān huā fěn (天花粉 Trichosanthis Radix, trichosanthes root).
• Swollen face: Add Bái zhǐ (白芷 Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, Dahurian angelica).
• Swollen neck: Add Wēi líng xiān (威灵仙 Clematidis Radix, clematis [root]).
• Firm stool: Add Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb) and Chuān shān jiǎ (穿山甲 Manis Squama, pangolin scales).
• Vacuity: Add Rén shēn (人参 Ginseng Radix, ginseng) or Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root]).
